When a designer delves into decorating a room...she/he doesn't run out and shop for furniture first. No,they always start with a plan and you should too.

And No! The one in your head won't do! "Why?",you ask(I heard you:))

To avoid costly mistakes your decorating plan needs to be on paper and in your hand! (you can print free graph paper & furniture cutouts here)

"Why?"(I heard you again :))You need measurements and a floor plan to make sure your new furniture will fit and for proper furniture arrangement. It's really hard to take a couch back!

So don't buy a thing until you have all your room's measurements on paper, and a room color scheme plan in place. How do you do that?

I often come up with a whole color scheme by heading over to a fabric store. Get swatches of the fabrics you like. Start by choosing one and adding coordinating fabrics. You can decide later which to use for your window treatments, furniture pieces, accent ide not to go custom, but you will have gathered great ideas and direction.
