What do I mean by "work"? In decorator terms "work" means the room flows, the design elements complement each other and work together, the room has harmony and function.(I refuse to say "functionality" because I don't believe it's a word! :-)
These things are what every good designer strives for when decorating the dining room or any room for that matter.
What Every Well Designed Dining Room Needs...
A good sturdy table- The Dining room table can be a pretty big purchase so make sure the one you have your eye on is the proper size for your room and fits with the look and style of the room.
Need help finding your style- Go to the Style Quiz A chandelier-Chandeliers can be the focal point of the dining room or at least a very important component. Tip Put it on a dimmer switch so you can dim the light to create ambiance. It should function as a good light source unless there is alternative lighting such as recessed lights in the ceiling, and it should add style to the room. This can also be a big purchase so be sure to choose one that fits with the overall style. Comfortable seating-I believe the dining room chairs should be comfortable and have a good seat pad. You want your guests to stay for dessert, don't you? All the chairs don't have to match but they should have something in common. ex. chair cushions, made out of the same material, have a similar design style... An area rug under the table- An area rug in the dining room really grounds the space, adds warmth to the room, and style as well. It's important not to go too small. All four legs of the chairs should sit on the rug when in the closed position. Optimally all four legs should rest on the rug in open position as well but this size rug can be pricey, but definitely do not put a rug just under the table, it looks odd. The style should complement the room. The more pattern, the least amount of dirt and spills will show. The shape should mimic the shape of the table. The type of rug, whether it be a natural fiber or synthetic can be whatever you prefer. A sideboard or buffet- This piece trumps a hutch/china cabinet because it provides more function. If you can do both, great! But a least have a sideboard to serve and rest food on. It also will give you storage for linens, flatware, china, and candles and provide a space for extra lighting and/or a beautiful display. *Tip Hang a large gorgeous mirror over the buffet, it will reflect the light from your chandelier and any candlelight you use. A centerpiece-This is totally a matter of preference, but a must have, or else the table looks naked! It can be daunting, I know even with my years of decorating, this one sometimes stumps me! What do I do? I look for inspiration through pictures.
Here are some decorating ideas: A large high quality silk floral arrangement
a sculpture
a collection of candlesticks of different heights
simple glass votive candles placed in a row (use odd number.
a large bowl of fruit
a large cylinder vase with a large pillar candle
an antique oil lamp
a long piece of driftwood
field grass in a short container the same shape as your table

Tip Here's a great dining room decorating idea to show off your china and make your dining room always look inviting: Keep your table set! It will always look pretty and help to keep the clutter from building up on it (I know you know what I'm talkin' about! :-) Art- Also a matter of preference but not to be ignored. Rule of thumb- don't just buy art because it matches the room. Buy art that takes your breath away when you look at it! It should evoke a feeling, look good in the room, and be the right proportion to the wall, hung at eye level. Window Treatments- Choose a window treatment that works with the room. For more help on this go to my Curtains And Window Treatment Guide Additional Dining Room Decorating Ideas: Wall sconces-- These add style and function, even if they are only candle sconces. China cabinet/hutch-_Great way to showcase your pretty china. This could be the focal point of the room. Built in cabinetry-Adds a lot of style and storage. Chair rail and/or wainscoting- great for protecting the walls and also to add style. Candles- create a mood, and give the room a warm glow. I use a lot of candles when I entertain. It really sets the mood!
Let's Talk About Color! Dining Room Colors!
I'm frequently asked what the best dining room decorating colors are.The best colors to use are warm colors because they stimulate conversation, they have a lot of energy, like red and orange hues. My rule of thumb is to use colors in the dining room that 1. stimulate conversation
2. enhances skin tone
3. enhances appetite
There aren't any dining room decorating "rules" for choosing color for a dining room but for me some colors work better than others.I stay away from gray- It doesn't look good at night (my opinion) Greens make the skin look sallow. Blue doesn't stimulate the appetite because there aren't any blue foods.Taupes and beiges are boring! I'm just not a beige kind a gal :) I think dining rooms should be lively and impressive! I achieve this with room color, beautiful dishes, lovely tablescapes, and lots of great dining room decorating ideas I gather from my favorite magazine and fellow designers.
