This Fireplace Remodel Project Is Sure To Inspire The DIY Decorating Diva In You!

This fireplace remodel was exactly what my room needed! A focal point!I knew it was never the "all" that it could be, my fireplace. I've been looking at it for 13 years and have always wanted to change it, make it something important! I tell people all the time, "if you want to get the daunting projects done around your home, plan a party!" All of a sudden you start to view your home through the imagined eyes of your guests to be. Works like a charm for me! My daughter, Rachel was making her First Communion so we were having a celebration at our home. Would have loved to get a new kitchen, but wasn't in the budget. I had been given some beautiful tile a while back (Thanks Chris!)so why not use it! I found a building plan for the mantel surround-using inexpensive MDF-ya gotta love it! And hence, a fireplace remodel project was off and running! Well, nothing for me is ever easy (maybe because I keep saying that)so why should the fireplace remodel be any different? My fireplace previously didn't have a tile surround and only had a fireplace mantel shelf. I wanted a tile surround and a crisp white mantel surround. I started with cream colored tumbled marble 1 x 1 mosaic tile. Tiled the whole thing, then took it all down because the cream looked putrid with my sunny yellow walls. My kids hated it too so it had to go. :( I then used these pretty blue mosaics I had, but I had a dumb attack and didn't start from the middle. Instead, I went from end to end only to realize that my pattern didn't end up equal, all my lines were crooked because I didn't start with a straight edge and it just goes on...so off that came! :( Now I'm out of tile! So much for free and cheap, right?!&*($@ Well after a few trips to The Home Depot and a lot of help from my terrific neighbor, Alfredo, the fireplace remodel came out gorgeous! My fireplace is now the ultimate focal point! It just draws your attention right in and adds so much interest to the room. Does Your Room Have A Proper Focus?
Thinking Of A Fireplace Remodel In Your Home?If there is a fireplace in a room, it is most always the focal point of that room and everything else plays second fiddle to it. The definition of focal point: The center of interest or activity Creating a focus in a room is a great way to bring perspective to that space. Every well designed room needs a focus point to keep the room interesting. What's the biggest enemy in interior design? Boredom! Every room needs a focal point, so if your fireplace isn't all that it could be than you should think about a fireplace remodel. Fireplace Remodel Ideas:
• Redo the fireplace mantel surround, Add new tile or stone. • Change out the fireplace mantel • Fireplace glass doors -Update the old ones Not up for a big fireplace remodel job but still want it to be more? Here are some simple fireplace design ideas... • Make or buy a decorative fireplace screen to cover the opening an add a focal point when there isn't a fire burning. • Place a large mirror or painting above the mantel. It should take up 2/3 of the width of the fireplace. • Or add a basket of flowers or some pillar candles to the inside of the firebox (make sure the fire is out first:) ) • Get fireplace design ideas. Eliminate the clutter and photos and replace them with an interesting mantelscape. Get ideas from interior design pictures. *noteYou should group your accessories in odd numbers-1,3,5...
But Not Every Room Has A Fireplace Or A Natural Focal Point
• You can create a focal point by using a piece of art or furniture piece and making that the focus by highlighting it by arranging furniture around it, and or lighting it...It must be important and interesting enough to draw attention to it, and it should leave a lasting impression. It will be the dominant force in the space.• The focal point determines the furniture arrangement for the room. The furniture should be arranged so that it highlights the focal point. • The TV should not be the focus in a room unless it is a media room. It doesn't have enough interest even though it can be quite dominant. I know the guys may not agree with me on this, but seriously, when the TV is off, how interesting is it to look at? It's a big black box! So what do you do if a room has a TV and a fireplace? • Place the television on the same wall and as close to the fireplace(or another focal point)so that they don't compete with each other.(if you can) • I wasn't able to arrange the fireplace and the tv on the same wall in Olga's living roomArranging Furniture In A Living Room-get more ideas here so I really played up the fireplace and not so much the TV (sorry Lou, you need to let me create a man cave for you! LOL).
