What You Should Know About Hanging Pictures

Hanging pictures can be a daunting task. I see so many clients with bare walls because they didn't know where or how to hang the art they had. A lot of times people just leave it on the floor leaning against a wall (sound like you?).

The first thing you should know about hanging art is to hang it at eye level. But whose eye level? If your 5'5" tall and you're living with someone who is 6' who's eye level do you use?

A simple rule of thumb for hanging pictures or any art is to place the center point of the art at 60" to 63" above the floor. From there you can adjust accordingly for the overall height of the ceiling or height of the furniture over which the art will hang. This measurement provides a great baseline starting point and a good foundation for staying away from art hung too high (most men are guilty of this:) A Decorating Picture From Ethan allen For Hanging Pictures Example To find the center point of the art piece measure the full height of the piece (if framed include the frame in the measurement) and divide by 2. Then measure the full width of the piece and divide by 2. The point at which these measurements intersect is the center point of the art piece.

Picture Hangers- To determine which picture hanging hooks are appropriate you'll need to determine the weight of the art you are hanging. I use my scale and first weigh myself and then weigh myself holding my picture. Just subtract your weight without from your weight with and that will give you the weight of the picture. Now you can purchase the proper picture hanging device for the weight of the artwork.

Monkey hook for hanging pictures

Have you heard of my friend Dave's ingenious Monkey Hooks? Amazing! You have got to try them!

Wired Frames- If your picture has a wire here's what to do to Determine where to put the nail (hanging hook...). Decide where(what height) you would like the top of the frame to be on the wall and make a pencil mark.

Pull the wire on the back of your picture up as taught as you can and measure the space left between the taught wire and the top of the frame.

If the measurement was say 3" than go to the pencil mark on the wall and measure 3" down from that mark and make another pencil mark at that spot. Place your nail there and hang your picture.*Note- if your hook has a drop between the place where it is nailed to the wall and the hook that the wire will rest then you will need to subtract that from your measurement.

Don't worry too much about making unnecessary holes in your walls (guys get really hung up on this:) try to do it when the hubby's not home or else he will probably make you live with the improper height because he won't want to put another hole in the wall(You know what I'm talking about!), your best friend is Spackle! Keep it close with a little extra paint and sandpaper and you will be fine. The holes will be behind your art anyway so who will know? But if you follow these instructions you probably won't make many mistakes.
