See These Rooms Before You Do Anything!
Getting ready to take on a living room redesign? Before you do anything, I strongly advise you to save time and moneyby creating a plan of action, a to do list. Then, create a floor plan, and look at lots of pictures of living room designs to get inspiration. I will help you do all that on these pages I've created about living room designs. So stay with me here! Common mistakes most diy'ers make with their living room designs: Purchase furniture before having a floor plan and room measurements Purchase cheap drapes and hang window treatments incorrectly Push all the furniture against the walls Choose paint color and or paint finish that's all wrong for the room. Don't make a design plan, room is not harmonious. Purchase big bulky man cave couches. Buy furniture sets off the showroom floor. Paint a sallow uninspiring paint color on the walls because they wanted to stay "neutral".
Take a look at these gorgeous living room designs and see how these designers do the living room right... I love this living room design! Notice all the seating. The designer used a lot of white in the room which keeps the room bright and airy. I love a white slipcovered look. They are much easier to keep clean than you'd expect because they can be washed. Opt for an indoor/outdoor fabric for stain resistance and durability. This is some funky wallpaper or stenciling but I really like it! I think it would be dynamite on an accent wall. And if you do a stencil and grow tired of it-what the hay it's only paint! Here are some more white slipcovers, so crisp and clean! Notice how the designer did an all white room. It's a brave move and takes effort to keep it from looking cold and stark. Bringing in natural elements like plants, wooden furniture and or accessories, rugs, natural fibers and texture help to add that warmth to all white living room designs. This traditional room is formal yet casual. Traditional with a twist. Here the designer used texture(the woven blinds and sisal rug)greenery, and pattern to warm this crisp white living room. This striped rug is similar to the gorgeous living room from the movie "Something's Gotta Give", take a look below...

Do you remember the white rocks in the silver bowls Diane Keaton had in this room? I just loved that, then she added one black one to represent Jack Nicholson, such a good movie, I watch it often.Anyone else notice the room decor in the sets when watching a movie? My kids tell me "Mom, focus on the movie!"
I love the warmth of this room and the juxtaposition of the crisp white fireplace mantle against the traditional wood wainscoting. I'm loving the sconces but I'm not a fan of the rug on rug. I would have liked to see beautiful wide planked wood floors and a large soft oriental rug. Photo courtesy of Traditional Home Magazine
A lot of great texture and pattern in this room. Very nice furniture placement. Think conversation when arranging furniture and where a guest will place a drink. Place the furniture in small groupings so that it is close enough for everyone to see each other and talk without shouting. I love that the designer opted for two club chairs instead of a loveseat that would have closed up the room.
Here is another view of this pretty room. I like the stools tucked under the sofa table. Great for easy, extra seating and a great place to let the kids have a snack without eating in the living room and messing up your sofa! That's the trick to having nice furniture and kids at the same time, don't let them eat or drink in the living room! It will teach them to have respect for nice things.
