Lolita recently wrote to me about her didng room, here's what she asks:
Hi: I was wondering if you could give me some tips on what to do with my dining room. I am in the process of purchasing a dinette set, it consist of a beautiful square(round edge) table with 2 glass bases, and 4 beautiful chairs I believe the chairs are classified as vintage tufted chairs in cream leather they have a brass metal frame and are on rollers the tuft is to die for, so contemporary, i fell in love with it and had to have it, but i also am in love with the shabby chic design so i would like to know is there a way the two can be combined together,l was thinking about getting a shabby chic buffet with a mirror back, also a mirror (to hang on the wall behind it), but i also found 2 wonderful brass etageres one that is enclosed with glass and has glass shelves and the other totally exposed also with glass shelves but what is so neat about this one is that the bottom comes out to create more space for your elements of decor, so right now i dont know what to do i also have a nice glass chandelier more (contemporary) not shabby chic but have in mind a shabby chic one i recently saw just gorgeous, i don't know if the two will work together, any advice you can give me will be deeply appreciated. Thankyou:

Hi Lolita,
Thanks you so much for your submission! I'm looking forward to adding your question to my site to inspire other visitors.
Your question is a tough one. It would be so much better if you could send me some pictures or a link to where I can see your new planned furniture pieces.
Shabby chic to me is about worn in comfortable and sweet. I think pretty tea cups with gold rims, unmatched china, white washed furniture or mismatched antiques with sweet doilies, dainty crystal chandeliers, comfortable throws, lacy pillows or mismatched pillows. All in all for me it's a pretty, feminine, look with a worn in timeless feel to it.
Keep your walls a soft pale shade and do a wallpaper look stencil like I just did for a client to add a timeless look. It looks faded a bit because it stenciled. Ends up looking like Damask wallpaper. You could use the metalic color that's on your chairs. Get the shabby chic chandelier. I would probably go with the contemporary etageres
but it's dificult to decide without pics. You don't want to make the table look like it's out of place. You could accessorize with shabby chic tea cups, china, and linens...
Hope that helps, and please send me some pics here http://www.interior-decorating-diva/Interiordecoratingforum.html and I'll send you the link when I publish your question to my site. Thanks again and don't forget to sign up for free monthly my ezine, you'll see the preview of the room I just finished with the stenciled wall and so much more. Here's a shortcut to sign up http://www.interior-decorating-diva/decorating-ezine-promo.html
